About Firebrand

Nicky set up her studio and the Firebrand business after gaining her degree in ‘3 dimensional metal work’ at West Surrey College of Art and Design in 1993.

In addition to running her studio, Nicky has also lectured on the degree course at her old college in Farnham (now known as the University of the Creative Arts) and continues to teach privately.

Initially she intended to study jewellery but quickly moved towards the blacksmithing element of the course because she found forging hot iron much more exciting.

During her second year at WSCAD she was chosen for the prestigious exchange program to the Masters course at Southern Illinois University in the USA.

She was awarded sponsorship for the exchange trip by the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers.

As part of her exchange trip she also spent time working as a voluntary technician at the Penland School of Craft in North Carolina.

Throughout her college training in metalwork she was surrounded by the influence of the glass and ceramic departments. This has fuelled her desire to combine other materials into her work.

She feels that iron can be harmoniously united with many materials to produce pieces of unparalleled beauty and finds this a rich and exciting area for development.
